The Clinical Study of the Female Alcoholics in Korea



Abstract
In this study, It was attempted to reveal the characteristic clinical pictures of the female alcoholics in their premorbid status, premorbid personality, family status and illness history, adjustment in life situation, drinking patterns and period, and precipitating factors of drinking etc.
There were 178 cases of the female alcoholics and 74 cases of the female nonalcoholics in this study.
The results were as follows:
1. They were distributed to the range of age from 20. to 50., and their mean age was 26.2.
2. As to the family illness history of the female alcoholics, they had much psychiatric problems including alcoholism, depression, psychoneurosis, suicide, and psychosis in their family members including father, mother, brother and sister.
In their family structure, it was more characteristic pictures that they had family illness history of father alcoholism, mother depression, brother and sister depression. It was concluded that female alcoholism was also a familial disease.
3. As to the premorbid status of the female alcoholics, it was revealed that their chief interest were drinking, smoking, and music, their religion were none, their main job were alcoholic manager, their sibling order were first daughter, and their socioeconomical-eductional level were relatively higher degree comparing wish the nonalcoholics.
4. It was revealed that comparing with the nonalcoholics, the alcoholics had the following characteristic pictures,
(1) Premorbid status and premorbid personality;
1) drinking was their only interest,
2) their socio-economical level was relatively higher degree,
3) they were heavier smoker,
4) their marital status was unstable,
5) they were frequently having personality disorders,
6) cyclothymic personality was more characteristic premorbid personality.
(2) Family status and family illness history;
1) the marital status of their parent was unstable,
2) their parents, father, or mother was not living now,
3) their parents or father was died earlier before puberty,
4) they had more frequently family history of alcoholism in father, parents, or total family members,
5) they had more frequently family history of depression in brother and sister, mother or total family members,
6) they had more frequently family history of the episode of psychiatric illness in father, mother, brother and sister, parents, or total family members.
(3) Drinking patterns and legal problems;
1) they had earlier onset of drinking before 20 years old, 2) they had longer duration of drinking before 5 years,
3) they had heavier degree of drinking,
4) they had higher frequency of alcoholic intoxication,
5) they had more frequenty legal problems.
(4) The adjustment in life situations and precipitating factors of drinking;
1) they showed more problems in occupational life, and poor relationship with their family life, 2) they showed more dissatisfactions to their sexual life, and poor interactions toward the
heterosex or interpersonal relationship,
3) deep seated inner conflicts and other psychiatric problems were more characteristic factors of their alcoholic dependency,
4) the problems with family members and the heterosex were also more prominent factors of alcoholic dependency,
5) on the contrary, the precipitating factors of drnking in female nonalcoholics were social problems in their interpersonal relationship.
It was concluded that the female alcoholics were closely related with their personality patterns and neurotic traits, they tend to have maladjustment in their familial, occupational and social life, and they had been exposured to the various conflicts and burdens of family. It was considered that the female alcoholism was also a familial disease as to the male alcoholism, and this incidence of Korean female alcoholics were also increased as to the female alcoholcs of western countries.
